Last week, Marie van der Zyl, President of the Board of Deputies, spoke at the Conservative Party conference and called for the British Embassy in Israel to be moved from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Her call to action took place without warning or consultation from the community or deputies.

Both Israelis and Palestinians consider Jerusalem to be their capital. The permanent status of Jerusalem must be agreed as part of a political resolution, as set out in the Oslo accords.

We must be part of the solution - not add to the problem.

To the President of the Board of Deputies,

Recently, you made a rallying cry at the Conservative party conference, calling for the UK Government to move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem - asking openly for the UK government to follow in President Donald Trump's footsteps.

Jerusalem is a holy city central to the Jewish faith, history and people.

Even more reason not to use this city for political purposes. An embassy move would serve to normalise the status quo: a status quo where one state is being named, empowered and strengthened, and the other not even recognised by the UK government. It has the potential to spark unrest and violence in a city which is a tinderbox, waiting to erupt at any moment.

We want our communal leaders to show support for a political resolution. Not to add to the problem. The international consensus is that the final status of Jerusalem is to be agreed as part of a negotiated peace agreement - one which we should strive for. Upending the international consensus pushes the possibility of ever finding an agreement even further away.

At a time where Israeli far-right rhetoric is growing in Jerusalem, a time where incitement by extremist nationalists is on the rise in Jerusalem - the role of the UK government and certainly the role of our community must be to call for peace, not to add fuel to the growing fire.
