There are now over 400,000 Israeli settlers in the West Bank living in 231 settlements, 130 of which have been established by the Israeli government and 101 ‘illegal outposts’. There are upwards of another 200,000 Israelis living over the green line in East Jerusalem. Join Yachad to meet Shabtay Bendet, the head of Settlement Watch, for an in depth discussion on the reality on the ground and what the most recent developments in settlement expansion mean for the possibility of a political agreement.

Settlement Watch is the tracking and monitoring department of Peace Now, the most long standing peace movement in Israel, and is the most reliable source of data on the West Bank settlements inside Israel today. It’s research is frequently used by the Israeli government as a data source. Shabtay is a former ultra-Orthodox Lubavitch settler who established Rehelim, one of the first illegal outposts in the West Bank where he became a father to six children. He later left the settlement and moved to Modiin where he became a journalist and gradually changed his political opinions which led him to work for Peace Now. You can read more about Shabtay here.

Being able to understand the ideology that drives the settler movement is crucial to understanding what is actually happening on the ground, and Shabtay is able to provide a real insider knowledge of these issues as someone who spent over 12 years dedicating his life to building an illegal outpost.
